Mac OS X for Publishing and Printing
8:15-9:15 AM
Chuck Weger
The Macintosh began the digital publishing revolution in the 1980's, and continues it into the twenty-first century. Mac OS X, the new kid on the block in operating systems, has changed many of the rules. What are the best practices for using Macs in publishing and printing? Where is PDF production going on the Mac? How can you best make use of Mac OS X in a cross-platform world?
Fonts and Font Management
9:45-10:45 AM
Chuck Weger
Apple has made many changes over the life of Mac OS X to better deal with professional font issues. These changes made our lives easier, but also complicated questions about best font management practices. Come to this session to learn how fonts are supported in Mac OS X, and how to organize them so the work in design and production environments. We'll also discuss font management tools, application-specific font issues, and other things every creative and production user must know about fonts in Mac OS X.
Mac OS X Tips and Tricks
11:00 AM-12:00 Noon
Chuck Weger
You may think you're a Mac OS X power user, but this session could prove you wrong. From hidden keyboard commands to useful widgets to the underlying Unix "shell," Mac OS X abounds with things that many users don't know about, but which can be useful in their daily work. Come to this session to learn some hidden and not-so-hidden power techniques and third-party utilities that can help you be more productive.
Metadata, XML, and Workflows with Adobe XMP
1:30-2:30 PM
Chuck Weger
Adobe's Creative Suite provides extensive support for metadata-rich workflows based on XML and XMP. Mac OS X introduced "Spotlight" for searching, and rich metadata storage in the file system. What do these mean for publishing workflows, and how can you best take advantage of them? This session explores emerging best practices for metadata creation and management.
Workflow Automation with AppleScript and Automator
2:45-3:45 PM
Chuck Weger
The combination of AppleScript, Unix shell scripting, and other scripting environments has made for an powerful mix of workflow automation tools. These kinds of scripts, as well as utilities written in approachable languages such as REALbasic, can help turn average users into productive users, and turn power users into workflow dynamos. Learn the basics of what's available on the Mac for making applications and the system run smarter without user intervention.
Power Panel and Closing Session
4:00-5:00 PM
A panel of Mac publishing experts discusses the important issues in Mac OS X, the future of the Mac in publishing, Intel-based Macintoshes, and other topics. Plus, the panelists will answer your tough questions about Mac OS X in design, publishing and printing.
Publish or Perish Game Show
6:00-7:30 PM
Are you tired after a long day of sessions and exhibitor meetings? How about a drink and some hors d'oeuvres? Do you want a chance to win valuable prizes?
If the answer to any of these questions is "yes," make sure to head to "Publish or Perish!" — the live, interactive game show where publishing experts and the audience match wits and make stupid jokes, while attempting to answer tough questions and win points on the game board. Industry trivia, technology, and history are among the topics in this fast-paced contest. We couldn't get Alex or Vanna, but Chuck Weger will host this wacky, fun event where two teams of experts battle it out in front of you.
Mark this on your calendars — it's a not-to-be-missed, once in a lifetime (okay, maybe more than once) event!
Management & Technology Track
Friday
Building Practical Digital Workflows
Friday 8:15-9:15 AM Identify, Measure & Fix Bottlenecks
Friday 9:45-10:45 AM Managing Quality / Color
Friday11:00-12:00 AM Automation
Howard M. Fenton
Who Should Attend:
Hands on operators, supervisors and managers in design studios, inplants, quick printers, commercial printers, prepress trade shops, and anyone else interested in analyzing and increasing productivity of a digital workflow
Course Brief:
Constantly increasing productivity is one of the keys to world class companies. It doesn't matter if you are a designer, photographer, prepress or a printing service provider –the faster you can turnaround jobs and the more work you can do with less resources, the more customers will beat down your doors. And its not impossible. Perhaps you have seen this for one week or one month in your company. When everything is working correctly you enter the “Productivity Zone” where throughput is high and rework is low. The obvious question is what prevents your company from remaining in the “Productivity Zone".
In this seminar there are solutions for everybody. For some companies hi-tech solutions are the missing link such as computer to plate, a PDF workflow, color management or remote preflight or proofing. For some companies procedural solutions such as “fast response preflight” or quality control inspection steps are needed. For some companies benchmarking staff with accurate measurements is needed. For other others attention to human resource issues such as recruiting, hiring, training, or motivating performance may be required. The advantages and disadvantages of each strategy is outlined and an implementation plan created to help insure success
You will learn:
How to identify the problems that keep you out of the “Productivity Zone” and how to avoid or overcome those problems.
Four main problems: static and moving bottlenecks, inconsistent or poor staff performance, inadequate staff training and the wrong measurements
Four solutions are world class procedures, staff changes, target training and hot, new digital technologies.
Case histories focus on all stages of digital production (order entry, customer service, scheduling, estimating, preflight, and prepress) and describing how successful companies have succeeded or failed in their implementation attempts and tells you how to avoid the mistakes and succeed.

Friday 5:15-6:30 PM
Taz and Howie “Is Print Dead”
Howard M. Fenton and Dr. Taz Tally
What ever show you go to today the controversy rages: some presenters say “Print and printers are a dying breed destined to go the way of the dinosaur”. While others say, “Print and printers will never die, they will remain in our world right next to mom and Apple Pie - forever.”
The only problem is that all of these presentations are one sided. If go to either presentation you do not hear both sides. You do not walk away thinking it was a fair, balanced presentation. And perhaps most important, you never get to hear how each side responds to the others arguments.
In this seminar we pit two of the leading speakers in the industry against each other. On the “Print is Dead” side is Taz Tally, famous for his taz Tally seminars. According to Taz, “Print will go the way of the buggy whip. The evidence is overwhelming. Just look at history”
On the other side, proclaiming the “Print will Survive” side is Howie Fenton famous consultant for GATF and NAPL and former editor of Pre Magazine. According to Howie “Print and printers will survive forever. They have survived CD-ROMs, radio, and TV and will survive other forms of New Media.”
Be warned this seminar is not for the faint hearted. Each time they perform this seminar both Taz and Howie one add more and more ammunition and more passion to their side. Considering that they been doing it for over a year now and have performed this for PIA affiliates from coast to coast - you know this is going to be a hot ticket. You can’t afford to miss the latest Taz and Howie “Print Is Dead” debate.
